Chapter 16

ASTRID HAD SOME AMAZING powers, that was for certain. I admitted I was rather glad she was on my side and not Azriel’s anymore. Otherwise, things would get ugly fast. I described Walker Manor to her in as much detail as possible. She did her magical thing and altered time and space and the next thing I knew we stood on the lawn of my uncle’s estate in Somerset.

As soon as we arrived, she collapsed against Killian, her face drained of color.

Alarmed, I asked, “Is she all right?”

“I’ll be fine.” She waved away my concern.

“Manipulating space and time takes a toll on her,” Killian said. He wrapped an arm around her waist to help her walk.

The house loomed in the distance with boarded up windows from the earlier attack. It hurt me to see the manor that way. But, knowing my uncle, he would already have the repairs under construction. A cold wind shifted through us with the reminder it was December. Late afternoon gray clouds threatened rain.

“Welcome to England,” I muttered.

“This is where you live?” Astrid peered at the construction zone with a skeptical eye.

“Yes. The manor was attacked by minions and Abaddon.”

I motioned for them to follow me. We walked across the pristine lawn dampened by the already fallen rain up to the main house. When I tried the front door, it was locked.

“I thought you said you lived here?” Killian asked.

I flushed hot as I cut him a heated glance. “I do.”

I rang the bell and waited. A few minutes later, Piers opened the door. His pinched expression gave way to one of surprise as he looked at me and then the two behind me.

“Miss Walker.” He stepped aside to let us enter. “Your uncle will want to see you posthaste. Come with me.”

He started for the stairs to the library before I managed a reply. He didn’t even question who the two were with me.

“Should we wait here?” Astrid asked.

“No, come on.” I waved them an invitation to follow.

We trudged up the stairs and, as we approached the library, my stomach erupted in a swarm of butterflies. My nerves were shot by the time the door opened and I got a peek inside. There was Kincade, Decker, Grace, Edward and Ophelia. Edward sat at his desk talking to someone on his cell phone. Kincade paced the length of the room. Decker perched in one of the chairs, his legs stretched out in front of him, his ankles crossed, head back and eyes closed. Ophelia and Grace were on the sofa. Ophelia had her arm around her in comfort as worry lines creased Grace’s face. They both jumped to their feet the second they saw me. Kincade stopped pacing. Edward hung up on whoever he was talking to and charged me.

Piers had the good sense to immediately step out of the way.

“Anna, where the bloody hell have you been? We’ve been looking for you for days.”

“Days?” I repeated. How long was I gone?

He grabbed me in a giant bear hug, squeezing me tight.
